A study conducted studied the effectiveness of the fruit when consumed nightly for 4 weeks. After the time period waking time after sleep onset and sleep onset latency were significantly decreased and the total sleep time and sleep efficiency was increased. (Asia Pac J Clin Nutr. 2011;20(2):169-74)
This is due to serotonin being the precursor to melatonin, a neurotransmitter that is derived from the amino acid tryptophan. Serotonin is acetylated in the pineal gland and then methylated to yield melatonin.
